Chapter 1: Flashback
Joanna sat nervously in Nathan’s living room, glancing between Nathan and James. The tension was thick. Nathan’s face remained impassive as he examined James, the innocent classmate who had been dragged into this web of deceit. James, sweating with unease, sat upright, trying to remain composed despite the suffocating atmosphere.
“James, you know what needs to be done,” Nathan said, his tone cold and businesslike. “This is the only way out.”
Joanna, clutching her hands together in her lap, nodded. “We need to make sure no one finds out the truth. I can’t have this ruin everything.”
James looked between them, unsure. “But… you want me to do what exactly?”
Nathan fixed his gaze on him. “You’ll go along with the story. You’ll say that you’re the one responsible for Joanna’s pregnancy. No one will ever know otherwise. The rest of us—myself included—are out of this. The truth stays buried.”
James, still hesitant, nodded, trying to steady his nerves. “Alright. I’ll do it, but you have to understand… I had no idea I’d get dragged into something this big.”
Nathan, desperate, leaned in. “She said you are her old friend who always had her back. After everything, she flew you out of town to give you a new beginning. She said you are the only person who could help. You could come in, play the part, and no one would be the wiser. No one would know about the affair. I just need you to say it was you, not me.”
James swallowed hard. He had no choice but to agree. “I’ll do it. But if things go wrong, don’t blame me.”
Chapter 2: The Hospital Incident
The hospital room grew colder as the truth settled in. Machines beeped softly in the background, and the sterile scent of antiseptic filled the air.
The DNA test was arranged. The results were finally in. The hospital room was suffocating with tension as Nathan tore open the envelopes, his eyes scanning the results. His hands trembled as he read them. Silence fell over the room like a heavy blanket.
Nathan exhaled sharply, his face pale. “Neither of these children are mine.”
The words detonated like a bomb in the room. Joanna gasped, her face draining of color. James shifted uncomfortably, unable to look Nathan in the eye. Gloria’s face paled, her composure cracking for the first time since this entire charade began.
Joanna’s voice cracked as she turned to James, her eyes wide with disbelief. “What do you mean? What’s happening?” Nathan, still in shock, stared at the results as if hoping they’d change. Joanna stood frozen, her hand over her mouth as if to stifle her cries. James was still unable to meet anyone’s eyes.
“What the hell is going on?” Nathan’s voice broke the silence.
“Dad…” Joanna whispered, her voice trembling. “I don’t know. I thought it was the right thing. But the test says… I thought you were the father.”
Nathan slammed his fist on the table, the force shaking the envelopes. “Don’t you dare blame me, Joanna! I trusted you! I thought I was the one who had to make things right. But I was just another fool in this charade.”
Joanna looked at him helplessly, her guilt and confusion etched on her face. “But I didn’t know… I didn’t know how this would turn out.”
Gloria, sitting quietly in the corner, finally spoke up. “We need to think this through carefully. It’s not too late to figure this out, to make it right.” But her words felt hollow. Nathan knew, deep down, that there was no making this right. The trust was shattered beyond repair.
Joanna stood up and walked to the window, her back to the others. “It’s all falling apart. What are we supposed to do now?”
Nathan, his anger barely contained, stood up slowly, his voice icy. “I’m not the father. You lied to me, Joanna. All this time… it’s been a lie. And now, there’s nothing left.”
Joanna’s eyes filled with tears as she turned to James, whose guilt was written all over his face. He had been part of this deception, but now the truth was unraveling, and they had no way to stop it.
Chapter 3: The Bar Confrontation
Nathan sought refuge at a local bar later that evening. The alcohol was his only comfort, even as it blurred the lines between reality and escape. By the time Michael, his old friend, joined him, Nathan had already downed five bottles.
Michael, concerned by Nathan’s condition, sat down beside him. “You’ve had enough, Nathan,” he said firmly. “Talk to me. What’s going on? Why did you do this?”
Nathan’s eyes were glassy, his anger barely controlled. “You wouldn’t understand. I had no choice. They… They pushed me into it. I had to do something, but now… I can’t undo it.”
Michael watched as Nathan took another swig of beer. “What happened with James, Nathan? He’s the one you had take the fall. Why him?”
Nathan slammed the bottle down on the counter, his frustration bubbling over. “I thought he could help, Michael. Joanna brought him in, said he could cover for me. And now look where we are. The test proved it. James isn’t the father either. No one is. What am I supposed to do now?”
Michael leaned forward, his voice low. “So, you still don’t know who fathered Joanna’s child?”
“No,” Nathan muttered, his voice a bitter whisper. “And now I’m stuck with more questions than answers.”
Just then, James entered the bar, a reluctant participant in Nathan’s unraveling life. He stood there awkwardly, unsure of how to approach the situation.
“What’s going on, Nathan?” James asked.
Nathan spun around to face him, his voice thick with anger. “You’re the one who made all this worse. You came in, played along, and now this… this mess is all on you. Why didn’t you tell me the truth?”
James swallowed, his face pale. “I didn’t know, Nathan. I didn’t know what I was getting into. But now, it’s too late to take it back. I didn’t ask for any of this.”
Nathan, seething with anger, paced back and forth. “Well, we need to know the truth. Another DNA test. I’m not letting this go. We have to find out who’s behind all this.”
A tense silence followed. As the words sank in, Nathan and James both knew the situation had spiraled far beyond what any of them had anticipated. The truth they were all avoiding was rapidly closing in on them, and neither of them had the answers.
Chapter 4: Samuel’s Return
Just as the storm began to calm, a blast from the past returned—Samuel, Gloria’s old lover. Samuel had been living abroad for years, but after hearing about Joanna’s situation, he felt compelled to return to uncover the truth. Gloria had called him, telling him that Joanna might be his daughter.
The potential for inheritance added a layer of complexity. Samuel, eager to connect with his daughter and provide for her, was confident that he could give her everything—if the DNA test confirmed he was her father.
But once again, the test results shocked them all. Samuel wasn’t the father.
“Why do the tests keep saying no?” Samuel asked, his voice rising in frustration. “I don’t care about anything else. I just want to know the truth. But now… now I don’t even know what to believe anymore.”
The room fell silent as everyone processed the devastating news. If Samuel wasn’t the father, then who could have fathered Joanna’s child?
Chapter 5: The Family Meeting
Nathan, now overwhelmed with rage and confusion, demanded a family meeting. The air in the room was thick with tension as they gathered at Nathan’s house—Gloria, Ruth, Samuel, and Joanna. The air conditioner hummed in the background, but no one felt the cool breeze. The heat was suffocating.
Ruth, Joanna’s grandmother, exclaimed, “I have a confession to make. Back in the day, my daughter was seeing someone secretly. I thought it was one of you.”
They were all shocked by her confession. Nathan shouted, “So you knew all this for 23 years, and you never…?” He turned to Gloria, his voice sharp. “Gloria, you need to tell us the truth!”
Joanna’s voice broke the silence. “I deserve to know. Who is my father? Who fathered my daughter?”
As accusations flew between them, Nathan lost his temper. “Gloria, you know the truth. Tell us! Who is the father? Who fathered Joanna’s daughter?”
But Gloria remained silent, her eyes cast downward, avoiding the chaos in the room.
“Enough!” Nathan shouted. “We’re getting the truth today.”
But Gloria didn’t answer. Instead, she fled upstairs, locking herself in one of the rooms. For over thirty minutes, the others banged on the door, pleading with her to open it.
Angrily, Nathan forced the door open with a crowbar. They were all shocked by what they found.
Gloria was dead, hanging from the ceiling, a handwritten note clutched in her hand.
Nathan stood there, his mind spinning as he stared at the envelope containing the last test results. He was desperate for answers, but the truth continued to elude him.
Ruth read the note aloud:
“I’m sorry. I couldn’t keep the secret any longer. I tried to protect you all, but it was too much to bear. As for the truth of Joanna’s father and my son’s father… look where the shadows lie. Some things are better left buried.”
The room fell into complete silence as the haunting words lingered in the air.
As Nathan picked up his grandson—or his step-grandson—and placed him in Joanna’s arms, the haunting ambiguity lingered.
Joanna, heartbroken, whispered to herself, “Why didn’t you just tell me?”
Joanna sat alone with her child. The tiny face, innocent and unaware of the chaos surrounding him, stared back at her. The weight of the questions that lingered in the air pressed down on Joanna like a heavy cloud. She whispered softly, her voice barely audible, “What are you to me? My son… or my brother?”
The haunting ambiguity hung in the room, unresolved, as the night stretched on. What was the truth? Who was the father? And would they ever uncover it, or would the secrets remain hidden forever?
The story ends in a cloud of ambiguity, as the mystery of who fathered Joanna’s child and the secrets Gloria left behind remain unsolved. The only certainty was that the truth would never fully come to light.
